We began Tuesday's ANM program with the entirety of a March 1993 recording for Radio Studio Zürich of «PORTRAITS» composed by Barry Guy and performed by the London Jazz Composers' Orchestra, directed by the composer. This music can be found on INTAKT records 2-CD 35 (1994).
Following that, we heard a significantly earlier incarnation of the LJCO performing a significantly earlier composition by BG, the leader and co-ordinator of the orchestra. «ODE» was performed at Oxford Town Hall, England, April 22, 1972. Due to time constraints, only parts VI "Presence of Mind" and IV "Infinite Divisibility" were played from INCUS records LP 07 (sides 3 and 4).
Besides Guy, five musicians out of the large ensembles performed in both pieces: Paul Rutherford (tb), Evan Parker and Trevor Watts (reeds), Howard Riley (p), and Paul Lytton (d).
To close the program, we heard a Barry Guy chamber bass solo entitled «TOUJOURS ROUGE» from the 1993 MAYA records release "Fizzles" (MCD 9301).
